Doesn’t this ring a bell! IRR, just like any metric, has limited meaning on its own. It is useful but only within specific assumptions. Has it been abused? Sure. Is it misunderstood? Of course. And that’s when it is potentially misleading. Will opening PE to retail result in misselling cases? Hum, I would take that bet. Reminds me of the perennial discussion around risk numbers such as VaR: when people start using a single number as North Star, believing it captures all aspects and happily forget about underlying assumptions…well, that always spells trouble.
